Band FAQ

Who are you, and what is going on here?

We're the Descendants of Erdrick, a rock band that plays classic video game tunes in a rock band setting!

Why is your name so weird?

It is a reference to Dragon Warrior (Dragon Quest in Japan). It works for our band because we are not the heroes of video game music, the composers are. Our sound descends from their sound to save the world anew. To answer your question more literally: blame Amanda.

How do you spell/pronounce it?

We prefer "Descendants" with an "a" at the end. "Descendents" is an accepted spelling and in fact a really good punk rock group, but we use the "a" version because it's what is in the game. We like to pronounce "Erdrick" as "URD-RICK." "AIR-DRICK" is something we won't complain about. "EAR-DRICK" is RIGHT OUT.

Is this all you do? Play video game music? Really?

That's what Descendants of Erdrick is all about. Some of the members do perform in original acts as well. Amanda is a solo artist, Chris and Mark are members of Fire Drinks Grass (the most dangerous acoustic band in Austin). John and Chris perform in Amanda's original band, and Lobos not only composes music for games, he creates his own games!

I love the music from ______ (so-and-so game), when are you going to play it?

We adore requests and outright demands, as long as the person making them keeps in mind that we already have a HUGE "to do" list, but we never stop learning new songs. So do please let us know, however you wish, what you would like to hear us play in the future.

When are you playing a show in my hometown?

As a band, we're entirely self-managed (as people, however, we rely heavily on our mothers), so booking a show in a town that isn't Austin, Texas will require us knowing where to go and who to contact. If you would like for us to play in your neighborhood, spread the word about us and let us know what places are "hip" and "with it" so we can get the ball rolling!

What are your favorite games?

Chris: Earthbound
Amanda: Final Fantasy 6, Dragon Warrior 3, Chrono Trigger
Lobos: Chrono Trigger and Link to the Past
John: Zelda II/Killer Instinct/Super Mario World
Lauren: Super Metroid, Suikoden II, King's Quest (series), and Beyond Good and Evil

How long have you been playing your instruments?

Chris: 14 years.
Amanda: 13 years.
Lobos: 11 years.
John: 12 years.
Lauren: 14 years, with a 6-year hiatus in the middle - so does that count as 8?

Why does Lobos have so many nicknames, and why is he such a force of nature?

He's the youngest, and it's the glasses. Please feel free to give him more nicknames.

You guys are awesome. Do you mind if I tell my Internet friends about you and give them MP3's/burned CDs?

Knock yourself out. We're definitely pro-sharing in this band; what better way to get the name out there, right? Just don't go too crazy out there. The wild rumors are true: bands actually need to sell stuff to survive! Also, it should go without saying that if we're not making any money off our hard work, you'd better not be either.

How do you guys figure out all of those complicated notes?

Some of our methods are top-secret, but it all boils down to all of us having the ability to learn by ear and to often think beyond standard rules of music and the instrument.
